Upcoming Training Sessions:

  • Airport Wildlife Hazard Management Workshop
    Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
    Dallas, TX (DFW)
    July 31, 2013 - August 2, 2013

Since 2006, Embry-Riddle Worldwide has offered Airport Wildlife Hazard Management Workshops at a variety of locations throughout the year.

The program consists of discussions on wildlife population management and dispersal techniques, Endangered Species Act compliance, strike reporting, wetlands mitigation, pesticides usage, drafting and implementation of integrated wildlife hazard management programs, and an overview of applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations and ordinances.

As with all Professional Education courses at Embry-Riddle Worldwide, Wildlife Hazard Management Workshops are open enrollment and do not require application to the University. Just register, pay and start learning. Each three-day workshop consists of:
    • Two days of interactive classroom sessions
    • Material taught by four of the nation
    • A hands-on field trip to the host airport where classroom theory is directly observed

The workshop is acceptable to the FAA Administrator for compliance with the airport wildlife hazard training requirements of Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 139 and FAA Advisory Circular 150/5200-36. This training is required for biologists who wish to write airport wildlife assessments or for persons who wish to conduct airport wildlife recurrent training sessions. It is also an excellent training program for those working in airports in wildlife mitigation. Our students have come from all over the U.S. as well as Africa, Europe and South America.

Successful West African Wildlife Training Session

ERAU Adjunct Professor Paul Eschenfelder (L) and Dr. Russ DeFusco (2nd from right) meet with Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority Director General Dr. Harold Demuren (center) at a reception during the week long Airport Wildlife Hazard Management workshop in Lagos, Nigeria, June 21-26, 2011.

The Nigerian CAA hosted the meeting which was supported by the U.S. FAA and U.S. Department of Transportation Safer Skies for Africa project. Dr. Demuren was on record as saying that birdstrikes to aircraft was one of the most serious hazards facing aviation in Nigeria. The cost of aircraft repair and lost service alone were causing some operators to question operations in west Africa. As a result FAA teamed with ERAU to bring ERAU Worldwide's Airport Wildlife Mitigation workshop course to Africa. Fifty-one students from eight African countries attended the course which allowed students the opportunity to learn background information and the practical application of airport wildlife mitigation. In addition, during the workshop the attendees, with the support of ERAU instructors, formed a 'West Africa Birdstrike Committee'. This committee will support 16 West African nations in wildlife mitigation by data sharing, auditing of airports and resource sharing.

Embry Riddle Aeronautical University currently has the only airport wildlife training program which is acceptable to the FAA Administrator. ERAU Worldwide regularly delivers the workshop several times a year at a variety of locations around the U.S.
